Store Sales Y/Y change2.3 %2.2 %

Highlights
Year-on-year sales growth at the nation's chain stores are at the slowest rates in more than a year, based on ICSC-Goldman's report earlier this morning and now based on Redbook which warns that June came in below plan. Redbook reports 2.2 percent same-store sales growth in the June 30 week and blames some of the weakness on calendar issues tied to the July 4 holiday which fell on Monday last year vs Wednesday this year. The four-week average is also at 2.2 percent which is the lowest average since April last year. Despite the weakness, Redbook says the results are consistent with a 0.2 percent gain vs May. This is a reading that points to slight strength for the government's ex-auto ex-gas category. Chain stores will post their own results on Thursday.

Definition
A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
