| Chain Store Sales |
|
Highlights
Chain-store reports are very positive in July with a number of the chains raising guidance in reaction to their results. Year-on-year rates of growth rose like a strong tide in July amid reports that fall goods are an early success as is the back-to-school season. June was a particularly weak month in the retail sector making the comparison with July look very solid. Today's results point to the first gain since March for the ex-auto ex-gas reading of the government's monthly retail sales report.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.
