Strength at discounters helped to boost ICSC-Goldman's same-store sales tally by 2.0 percent in the Jan. 16 week, boosting the year-on-year pace to plus 2.6 percent for the strongest pace since early December. But the report warns that January is a low volume month and is easily affected by small swings in demand. Citing low inventories and lack of consumer demand, ICSC-Goldman expects the month as a whole to be flat to up 1.0 percent.

This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
