Highlights
A third straight gain for the homebuilders' housing market index is the latest indication that the housing sector is kicking in. September's index rose 1 point to 19 with strength centered in current single-family purchases. Traffic is also up. The single-family component of the housing starts report is on a five-month uptrend. Housing starts for August will be posted tomorrow at 8:30 ET. Stocks edged higher in immediate reaction to today's report.

Definition
The National Association of Home Builders produces a housing market index based on a survey in which respondents from this organization are asked to rate the general economy and housing market conditions. The housing market index is a weighted average of separate diffusion indexes: present sales of new homes, sale of new homes expected in the next six months, and traffic of prospective buyers in new homes.
