Highlights
Builders are reporting improving conditions in what is badly needed good news on the housing sector. The housing market index rose 2 points to 17 in July with gains centered in current sales. Traffic is also improving. Demand may now be getting a visible boost from falling home prices, though the report, issued by the nation's homebuilders, warns that credit flow is still tight. There wasn't much reaction to the report, at least initially. Housing starts will be posted tomorrow.

Definition
The National Association of Home Builders produces a housing market index based on a survey in which respondents from this organization are asked to rate the general economy and housing market conditions. The housing market index is a weighted average of separate diffusion indexes: present sales of new homes, sale of new homes expected in the next six months, and traffic of prospective buyers in new homes.
