Highlights
The slightest sign of life is evident in the February housing market index which inched up to 9 from 8. Buyer traffic showed improvement, up 3 points to 11. But there was also more trouble as the index for prospective sales fell back 2 points to a record low 15 -- and a reminder of how depressed all the readings are in this report. The text of the report was definitely downbeat saying the results show no improvement as foreclosures flood the market.

Definition
The National Association of Home Builders produces a housing market index based on a survey in which respondents from this organization are asked to rate the general economy and housing market conditions. The housing market index is a weighted average of separate diffusion indexes: present sales of new homes, sale of new homes expected in the next six months, and traffic of prospective buyers in new homes.
