Chain Store Sales

Highlights
Chain-store sales proved about as bad as the weekly chain-store reports have been warning. A shaken consumer, together with unseasonable weather, made for greater rates of month-to-month contraction at many retailers. Not all retailers did badly with some showing little change from May to June and some on the high-end showing mild improvement.

Unit vehicle sales slipped back in June though sales at gasoline stations look to be very strong given the month's price jump. But the non-auto non-gas section of the report, which makes up two thirds of the report, looks to show significant month-to-month weakness in results that would give a boost to the bears.
